Indications according to traditional Chinese medicine: Chai Hu Shu Gan San soothes the liver and harmonises the blood. It is indicated in cases of Liver Qi overpressure and stagnation syndrome, marked by pain, distension and fullness in the hypochondria, sensitivity of the hypochondria to palpation, tightness in the chest, tendency to sigh or tendency to take deep breaths to relieve tightness in the chest, depression, irritability, feelings of frustration which easily provoke anger, suppressed emotions, belching, nausea, difficult digestion, constipation, fullness and distension in the epigastrium and abdomen, tightness in the rectus abdominis, muscle tension, distension of the breasts, irregular menstruation, cold and clammy extremities, alternating chills and fever, sensitivity to changes in the external environment, thin white coating on the tongue, tense pulse. Chai Hu Shu Gan San can be used for chronic hepatitis, cholecystitis, bile reflux gastritis, chronic gastric reflux, intercostal neuralgia, pleurisy, hypertension, depression, dysmenorrhoea, irregular menstruation, premenstrual syndrome, mastitis, breast hyperplasia, chloasma (melasma), and sexual dysfunction, when the patient shows signs of overpressure and stagnation of Liver Qi.
